Vikings QB situation becomes cloudy
Minnesota Vikings QB Joe Webb was cheered, Tarvaris Jackson was booed, Sage Rosenfels was unimpressive and the Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback position just became cloudier. The question has remained all pre-season for the Vikings, keep 4 quarterbacks or three. Sage Rosenfels, despite a 1 for 4 10 yard performance last night, has really been the best performer for the Vikings on the field these past 4 games. Rookie Joe Webb, who was cheered when he entered the game in the third quarter, showcased some of his playmaking skills. He scrambled for a 41 yard gain and tossed a 63 yard touchdown to newly signed receiver, Javon Walker. Tarvaris Jackson completed 2 passes for 2 yards.
Jackson was booed by the crowd and displayed his I don’t care attitude after the game to reporters. He said, “Regardless of the situation, regardless of why they’re booing, I can’t do nothing about it. It got to a point now where I don’t even care”. Well Tarvaris perhaps therein lies the problem. You don’t care and the performance on the field reflects that. Jackson in 4 games this pre-season has completed just 12 of 33 passes for 73 yards. Not exactly lighting it up are you?
In the long run, I think that Jackson should be the one to go. The Vikings should keep Rosenfels and Webb. If they do keep Webb, I would like to see the Vikings try to incorporate him into the offense somehow, though it would be difficult as he’ll most likely be designated as the third quarterback on game day. The Vikings have until 5pm CDT on Saturday to make up their minds, It will be an interesting 36 hours.
Terry Bradshaw tosses Vikings Brett Favre under the bus
Anyone who has watched FOX Sports Sunday Pre-Game Show in the past decade, knows that analyst/commentator/former 4 time Super Bowl winning quarterback Terry Bradshaw was throwing out some man-love for Mississippi born Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre, now Bradshaw is simply throwing Brett Favre under the bus. While giving a speech today in Shreveport Mississippi at the Independence Bowl Kickoff Luncheon, (that’s right folks, college football starts this weekend!) Terry Bradshaw took pokes at just about everything and everyone in the NFL. He was harsh in his comments about Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and a possible reduction in his suspension, saying he didn’t support a reduction. He said he favored Tom Brady over Peyton Manning because Brady has won more Super Bowls. He said he can’t stand Chad Ochocinco. But some of the harshest criticism was directed at a player he spoke so highly of just years ago, Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre.
Bradshaw stated that he thinks Brett Favre is a great player, “He’s a great player-never seen anything like it”. But the accolades stopped there. In speaking about the retirement situation which has surrounded Favre for the past three seasons, Bradshaw said, “I don’t know who that guy is. You kiss his ass long enough, that’s what happens”. That’s pretty damn brutal from someone who defended him on television throughout Favre’s career.
He went on to say that he always seems to do something stupid. He questioned his judgment to throw the interception in the NFC Championship game last year.
Well, don’t take it personal Brett, he also tossed his former team under the bus, saying if he had it to do all over again, he would like to have played with the New Orleans Saints instead of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Do the Vikings pull off a last minute deal?
Will the Minnesota Vikings pull off a last minute deal and execute a trade with the San Diego Chargers for WR Vincent Jackson? With Sidney Rice sidelined for at least half the season, Percy Harvin questionable at any given time, the trio of Javon Walker, Brenard Berrian and Greg Camarillo is certainly not an imposing line up.
I say the Minnesota Vikings should pull the trigger and trade with the San Diego Chargers.Vincent Jackson is a legitimate premiere wide receiver. If the Vikings are going to without Sidney Rice for the first 8 games, they are going to need a big time receiver. 6 of the first 8 games are @New Orleans Saints, vs. Miami Dolphins, @ New York Jets, vs. Dallas Cowboys, @Green Bay Packers and @ New England Patriots. How do you think the Minnesota Vikings fare with a legitimate number one wide receiver in those games?
Additionally, if Rice can return after 8 games, how would a trio of Vincent Jackson, Sidney Rice, and Percy Harvin look on the field. Not to mention Adrian Peterson in the backfield along with Visanthe Shiancoe at tight end. Not to mention that would be a pretty stacked offensive team for several years to come.
Brett Favre returned for one last run for the ring and I think the Vikings should pull the trigger on a deal for Jackson. Otherwise, without him the Vikings might be scrambling for a wildcard spot late in the season.
Do the Vikings trade Rosenfels now?
So what exactly is going to become of Minnesota Vikings QB Sage Rosenfels? Although this season does hinge on the success of a one, Brett Favre, the Vikings have a log jam of backup quarterbacks. Sage Rosenfels has played perhaps the best football this preseason, rookie QB Joe Webb has showed perhaps the best promise, and Tarvaris Jackson is the odd man out, heading into the final season of his contract.
If the Minnesota Vikings are planning on releasing QB Sage Rosenfels, which I think is a bad move, they might want to pick up the phone and call the New York Giants. The Giants are now left with no experienced backup for Eli Manning, as they have now placed career Manning family backup Jim Sorgi on the IR list. This move now leaves Rhett Bomar as the Giants backup.
The Vikings would most likely lose rookie Joe Webb if they released him on waivers, he shows some promise as becoming a playmaker. Minnesota will likely release either Jackson or Rosenfels, so why not try to peddle one or the other to the Giants as they are looking for an experienced backup. Rosenfels would most likely be the quarterback that the Giants would be interested in, so if they were going to release him any way, leak out the story that Jackson is on the bubble and try to get something in return for Rosenfels.
Regardless, someone is going to be moved, the Vikings will not carry 4 quarterbacks heading into 2010.
Vikings Favre looks rusty, Harvin plays
The Minnesota Vikings improved their preseason record to 2-1 with a win over the Seattle Seahawks 24-13, but QB Brett Favre looked rusty despite Percy Harvin playing. Brett Favre threw for nearly 200 yards in the game, but he had two interceptions and lost a fumble, no doubt a result of missing much of training camp. WR Percy Harvin recorded a pair of catches, in his first playing time since his migraine headache episode at training camp. RB Adrian Peterson was bottled up for much of the game, but did manage to break lose in the first quarter for a 24 yard scoring run.
Vikings backup QB Sage Rosenfels looked good again in limited action and left the game with a 155.6 passer rating. It is going to be interesting to see who wins the backup quarterback position for Minnesota this season. Rookie QB Joe Webb shows promise, but he is a project and I really can’t see him clearing waivers in order for the Vikings to place him on the practice squad.
WR Percy Harvin addressed the media regarding his headaches. “They found some things that we think are the main cause of it. We’re all feeling really confident. I know we’ve said that a couple times, but I think this time we found what the main cause was”, Harvin told reporters. It was recently reported that Harvin’s collapse at a recent practice was caused by an adverse reaction to medication he was on at the time.
The Vikings defense recorded 1 turnover, 3 sacks and held the Seahawks to only 44 yards rushing.
