ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Minnesota Vikings will meet either late this evening or on Monday morning in order to discuss whether or not they wish to pursue San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson. Mortensen is reporting that Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf will have the final say in whether the team pursues Jackson or not.

Mortensen states that the Minnesota Vikings are weighing several issues. A possible signing of Jackson could interfere with a long term deal for Sidney Rice. The Vikings are reported to have issues with Jackson’s DUI arrests and what might happen if he violates the NFL personal conduct policy again and what the demands would be to sign Jackson to a long term deal.

ESPN is reporting that the Vikings are considering offering Jackson a 1 year deal worth a reported 4-6 million while guaranteeing Jackson that the Vikings would not franchise him next season. Also under consideration is the compensation that the San Diego Chargers would receive in exchange. No doubt that between now and Wednesday, there will be a million rumors regarding Jackson, but I stand by my assumption that he makes a great fit for the Minnesota Vikings.

Sunday morning thoughts on Vikings-Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins visit the Minnesota Vikings this afternoon. The Miami Dolphins were my selection to win the AFC East this season, however their offense didn’t appear to be clicking last week against the Buffalo Bills despite their 15-10 win. The strength of the Dolphins is their running attack, featuring Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. The Dolphins’ strength plays right into the Minnesota Viking’s defensive strength. The Vikings defense should be able to contain these two talented backs and force the Dolphins to go to the air.

While the Dolphins did acquired Brandon Marshall in the offseason, Dolphins QB Chad Henne has yet to prove he is more than simply a game managing style of quarterback. Marshall was targeted 13 times in Buffalo last week with Henne completing 8 for just 53 yards to the talented wideout. In Miami’s defense though, the Buffalo Bills have a fantastic secondary and were second against the pass last season only behind the New York Jets.

I expect to see a heavy dose of Minnesota Vikings QB Adrian Peterson today as the relationship between Favre and his receiving corps continues to gel.

There has been a report circulating that the San Diego Chargers have taken the first step in negotiating with an unidentified team for WR Vincent Jackson. The Vikings were asked about Jackson this week and declined any comment. I stand by my assumption that he’d be a very good fit for the Vikings this season. The deal is reportedly a 1 year deal worth 7 million dollars. It is also believed that the Chargers will hold off on any trade discussions until after this weekend.

Adrian Peterson wants the ball

Fantasy football owners who selected Adrian Peterson were most likely scratching their head last Friday, don’t don’t fret just yet, the Minnesota Vikings running back says he wants the ball. In fact he wants the ball a lot. The running back says he wouldn’t mind 50 carries a game. When asked by reporters about his workload, Peterson replied, “About 40,50 carries. That would be lovely. I would love that.” Adrian, so would fantasy football owners too.

Until the Minnesota Vikings offense gets firing on all cylinders, I would think that a heavy dose of Peterson should be in order. 25-30 carries a game would not be unreasonable to ask. Of course, I have to offer this disclaimer, I own Adrian Peterson in two of my fantasy league. In one league I had the first overall pick and chose Peterson over Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson. After week one, I found myself asking whether or not my draft strategy was wise. I selected Peterson over Johnson based on history. Backs which have run for over 2,000 in one season, fail to come close to duplicating those kinds of numbers in the following season. Never mind the curse of the 370, where running backs which carry the ball over 370 times in one year, have very poor seasons the next year.

So, from a selfish point of view, how about feeding Adrian Peterson the ball All Day.

Minnesota Vikings prepared to make offer for Jackson

According to one site, the Minnesota Vikings are prepared to make an offer to the San Diego Chargers for disgruntled wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Vincent Jackson is supposed to have an arbitration hearing today to see if the league will reduce his suspension from 6 games to three. According to the article I referenced, if the suspension is reduced, the Minnesota Vikings are prepared to make an offer for the receiver.

I have written here before, I think this would be a great move for the Minnesota Vikings. First of all, what happens if Sidney Rice doesn’t make it back by week 8? What happens if there are complications? Are you really comfortable going all season with the receivers on the Vikings roster currently?

Secondly, if the Vikings were able to sign Jackson to a long term deal, then heading into 2011, the team would have Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice and Vincent Jackson as wide receivers for whomever plays quarterback next season. That’s a pretty solid trio. The article makes no reference to what the San Diego Chargers might be wanting in return for Jackson but at this point it can’t be as much as they were asking at the time of the draft which was two second round picks.

Minnesota Vikings looking at receivers

Jay Glazer from Fox Sports is reporting that the Minnesota Vikings are looking to bring in a couple of wide receivers this week. I’ve written that the Minnesota Vikings should have gone after San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson. It is being reported that the Minnesota Vikings will be bringing in former New England Patriots WR Sam Aiken and former Philadelphia Eagles WR Reggie Brown this week for workouts.

This past Thursday, Minnesota Vikings QB Brett Favre only completed 4 passes to his wide receivers. I’ve written at length about how much the Vikings were going to miss WR Sidney Rice to stretch the field, and it showed on Thursday night. The move to bring these two in for a workout is nothing special.

Sam Aiken has 47 career receptions for 677 yards and 2 scores. Reggie Brown has shown some skills in the past while with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he couldn’t beat out a very thin receiving corps in Tampa Bay after the Buccaneers traded for him. Brown has 177 career receptions for 2574 yards and 17 scores.

These are nothing more than a continuation of the Minnesota Vikings loading up on more possession style receivers. Vincent Jackson is having a hearing this Thursday to get his suspension reduced to just 2 more games. This is the receiver the Vikings need to be targeting. Sidney Rice is rumored to be ready halfway through the season, but what if something delays his return? Quit screwing away with other team castoffs, sign Vincent Jackson already.
